Date Night at the Dodging Duck: Boerne's Creek-Side Brewpub

Every week we feature one standout spot for an evening out along the I-10 West corridor, outside Loop 1604. This week: The Dodging Duck Brewhaus, a Boerne institution in a renovated century-old home on Cibolo Creek, where house-brewed beer, a deck over the water, and live music add up to a relaxed, memorable night.

The Spot

What makes this the corridor's best-known creek-side evening.

The Dodging Duck Brewhaus is a brewpub in a renovated turn-of-the-century home at 402 River Road, set along Cibolo Creek in Boerne's historic heart. It is the kind of place the corridor has been telling newcomers about for years: you walk in, the brew tanks are part of the room, and the whole back of the house opens onto the water. On a warm evening the deck fills first, because the view from a table by the railing is the whole point.

The pub brews its own beer on site, and the City of Boerne's own profile of the business notes its medals at the World Beer Championships. The resident ducks along the creek give the place its name and its constant, low-key entertainment, and the menu is proudly eclectic: Hill Country sausage, bratwurst and sauerkraut, the Heart of Boerne salad, and chimichurri-grilled beef tenderloin all share one kitchen. Nothing about it is stiff. That is the date-night appeal: an evening that feels special without feeling formal.

01

Two things to order.

Start with the Heart of Boerne salad, about $11 on recent menus: hearts of palm, artichoke, and mixed greens with cranberries, pecans, bleu cheese, and a celery seed vinaigrette. It handles the vegetables so the rest of the table can handle everything else.

Then split the chimichurri-grilled beef tenderloin, listed in the mid-teens on recent published menus, or go more casual with the half-pound Brewhaus burger, around $12. Either way, order a flight or a pint of what is pouring that day. The kitchen's menu page is dated and says prices and dishes change frequently, so treat it as the current source.

Fair Housing Note

This feature describes the place, the food, and the experience, never the kind of people who are supposed to enjoy it. Along the corridor and everywhere else, we introduce places by what they offer, not by who lives or dines there.

02

One thing to do: take the deck as the light goes.

Aim for a table on the creek-side deck as the evening light settles on the water. The pub's entertainment calendar lists live music most evenings, so you can time dinner to the first set. Heaters keep the deck usable into the cooler months, and the ducks on the creek never stop being the room's best conversation piece.

The pub is open every day, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and weekdays bring Ducky Hour from 3 to 6 p.m. Boerne sits at the corridor's northern end, and the drive back down I-10 through the Boerne area is the same scenic stretch residents already know from a dozen other evenings out.

Dodging Duck questions, answered

Where is The Dodging Duck Brewhaus?

The Dodging Duck sits at 402 River Road in Boerne's historic heart, alongside Cibolo Creek and a short distance from the Main Street core where the Hill Country Mile runs. Boerne anchors the northern end of the corridor, reached from I-10 West via the SH 46 interchange.

What hours does the Dodging Duck keep?

The pub is open every day: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Ducky Hour runs 3 to 6 p.m. on weekdays. Hours are current per the pub's official site and can change with events, so confirm on its website before you go.

What should two people expect to spend?

Recently published menus show small plates and salads around $7 to $13, the signature Brewhaus burger around $12, and the beef tenderloin in the mid-teens to about $20, with drinks extra. The pub's own menu page is dated and notes prices change frequently, so it is the final word before you go.

Is there live music at the Dodging Duck?

The pub advertises live entertainment most evenings on its official site, with local listings showing music on the creekside patio on many evenings and weekend afternoons. The lineup rotates, so the venue's entertainment page is the best way to see who plays the night you plan to visit.
